The Business Owners Society vs BNI
BNI sells referrals from a room. We sell customers from your marketing. Plenty of people pay for both.
Based on pricing and product information published on both companies’ own websites, checked August 2026. If we’ve got something wrong, tell us and we’ll correct it.
The short answer
BNI is a referral network. It works, for the right business, if you turn up every week without fail and put the effort in. It is not marketing training and it does not claim to be — it competes with us for the same wallet and the same Tuesday morning, not for the same job.
When to pick BNI instead
If your business runs on word of mouth, your customers are other local businesses, and you will genuinely commit to being in a room at quarter to seven every single week, BNI can be excellent. Category exclusivity is a real advantage and their UK network is large.
Side by side
BNI do not publish UK fees on their site. Figures below are from third-party reporting and exclude weekly room and breakfast costs.
| The Business Owners Society | BNI | |
|---|---|---|
| Price | £49 a month | ~£899 + VAT a year, plus weekly costs |
| Price published openly | Yes | No |
| What you get | Marketing tools, training, accountability | Referrals from a local chapter |
| Time commitment | 20–30 minutes a week, any time | Weekly meeting, early morning, plus one-to-ones |
| Turn up or lose your place | No | Yes — attendance is enforced |
| Category exclusivity | No | Yes |
| Teaches you to market | Yes | No |
| Local search tools | Yes | No |
| Works while you sleep | Yes | No — it needs you in the room |
The arithmetic
BNI is roughly £899 plus VAT a year before you count the weekly breakfast and room fees, which most chapters charge on top. Call it £1,300 to £1,500 all in, plus about two hours of your week, every week.
Ours is £588 and about twenty minutes a week, whenever suits you.
Switching
These genuinely do different jobs, and we would not tell anyone to leave a chapter that is producing work. The question worth asking is what happened over the last twelve months: if you can name the jobs BNI brought you and they cover the cost, stay. If you cannot name any, that is the answer.
£1 for your first month. Then £49 a month.
